I am studying microbiology for a nursing degree. I have started studying Infectious Prion Disease and it reminds me of the condition that my father had prior to his death (Olivoponotcerebellar Ataxia). I was wondering if there has been a connection made between the 2 diseases?
Another name for OPCA is multiple systems atrophy (MSA). In MSA, there are intracellular aggregates of the protein, alpha-synuclein. These aggregates gradually engage increasing numbers of neurons in the brain as the disease progresses. Angot et al (Lancet Neurology, 2010; vol 9 pp1128-38) theorized that MSA and other synucleinopathies (PD and DLB) behave like prion disorders. He provides basic science evidence.

I think we are going to find many abnormal protein folding diseases as a basis for many neurodegenerative disease such as AD and prion diseases
