Genetic engineering should be seen as one of the many tools available for use by plant breeders to improve crop varieties so that we increase food production, control pests, and improve farm profits.
Plant breeding, in its broadest sense, is the art and science of changing the plants genetically in relation to their economic use. Whereas, genetic engineering is the genetic manipulation (bypassing sexual reproduction) such that individuals with a new combination of inherited properties are established. Plant breeding is essentially a technology, and it utilizes various techniques. To my opinion, genetic engineering is the well utilised technique of present day plant breeding.
