From my own struggles, I could list several lessons:

1) Reading and writing well have a strong impact on your career because you need to express everything in an engaging way while having a solid technical foundation;

2) We should focus on the task/project to be done and reading/watching content on project management helps even people who work with arts;

3) We need to accept that experience does nit come inside a pill: it takes time to become wise;

4) Surround yourself and network with reasonable and interesting people since different perspectives help one to find better solutions; and

5) Be informed but nit over-informed: we need time to assimilate and elaborate contents.

In my opinion, the research evaluates what is done again and solves an intractable problem. The main purpose of the research is not a journal of high impact factor or an international scientific conference.

To obtain more citations, the main factor only depends on published a paper in high impact factor is the main factor. Is it logical?

To some extent it is, but mostly it is not.

After successful publication in a good scholarly journal your work is almost done and it needs less care (like sharing, updating etc of your publication at those places where it is not updated or indexed like ResearchGate, LinkedIn academia etc).

Also you can have quaterly or yearly checks on the citation metrics of your articles.

I think your question is that is the period after publications the most critical stage of scientific research or not.

I personally think that pursuing the research is the most critical stage of scientific research. This is because emphasis should be given in the journey and not on the destination. The journey is eternal but the destination exists for a small time. The moment one reaches the destination, it goes out of her/ his mind. Thus, it loses its significance.

In today's world after publications, the paper has to be shared in various research sites like RG. The process of increasing the number of citations actually begins after the article has been published.

I think current and burning topics, attractive titles, unique findings, the appropriate numbers of references, and standards of the Journal are the vital factors for an increased number of citations. Usually, a guideline/protocol or review of those get many citations within a very short time.

There are so many factors for a published article to be cited by other researchers.

If , the content of the article is such that there are so many articles on that topic , then there is less chance to be cited.

The published article need to be such that that is easy understandable by other researchers , then that has a good chance to be cited.

The circulation of the journal should be wide .

The research topic needs to be such that it is needed for for other researchers of different branches , then it has much chance to be cited.

There are many other factors on which the citation chance depend on.

I think the period before publications is one of the most critical stages of scientific research. There are various factors that help to obtain a large number of citations like the relevance of the topic considered, the new contribution one brings into the existing contributions, the perspective from which the study is considered, the lack of material available on a particular topic etc.

Just to share with you an example, the day Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to resign was made public, a friend of mine told me your next book can be on this topic. Deep within me I felt it was too late to wait for the next book. I contacted the editor of The New Leader and got permission to forward an article. The condition was to do it as soon as possible. In few hours time the article was ready and it was published: Leaving space for forging new paths of leadership (Some remarkable qualities of Pope Benedict XVI) in New Leader, Vol.126, No.5, March 1-15, 2013, 10-12. A few days after, I got a call from the editor who said: someone told him that a Bishop could have written that article… he added: Thank you very much even after fifty years people will read and refer to your article.

Another point that facilitates citation is whether your publication reaches those who are looking out for such contributions. I was surprised to know that a Roman University has made a review of one of my articles on: Avenues of Collaboration in Catechesis in Awakening Faith - Convention issue 5th Jan 1997. Avenues of Collaboration in Catechesis in The Examiner, 10 January 1997, 10-11.

After reading one of my articles: Salesian Sister as Faith Educator in, In Cristo, January 1998, Vol. 36. no.1, 25-31, an editor of a Journal once wrote to me saying: I wish I had your article for my Journal…

In order to obtain a large number of citations, one of the factors that can be considered is to make known your publication. A group of postgraduate students of mine once told me that they feel great when a professor presents his/her publication. This was when at their request, I presented to them one of my National seminar presentations on: contextualizing catechesis, a practical way of faith formation.

Go ahead with your researches and publications, advance culture. Certainly many will be enriched and inspired by your work. We can never predict on the influence of our work. Today even sky is not the limit.

Citation is not always a criterion for quality of a paper. Between 1990 and 1995 I published several papers in famous journals, regarding mathematical formulation and algorithms for numerical analysis of reinforced concrete structures. I was selected as candidate for quality researcher. Professor Leondez published a little extended version of one of my papers as a chapter in a 5 chapters collected book. The reviewers expressed my formulation as the best and the most general formulation that he have seen. During the last decade of the last century several general duties commercial software such as abaqus, sap, ansys and etc. with the capability of analysis of RC structure , became available. Therefore researchers used the software for their analysis and hence referenced to those using the softwares. Citing my papers only begun in the 2nd decade of 21st century by those working on development of software in top universities such as Imperial college in UK and RICE in USA. In this case also the number of citation is not high because developing software is rare and is not comparable to citation from those used software ! After 30 years those papers have new ideas, and that is satisfactory for me.

In the long run, self citations will make you only harm, as in many cases they are not counted

I think that the most critical stage of any research is the process of research. If your research is of good quality and you properly describe it in your paper, you'll receive a number of citations. When you are in the process of research, you have no time to think about citation.

Focusing on your research is more important. If you have done a quality work and written a paper by properly highlighting the novelty in your work..citations will increase. In certain cases even if you have done all these, it will take some time for the citations to increase. So it's better to focus more on doing quality research than on the citation count.
