Often "See & Treat" is presented as an organizational solution to waiting times problems in A&E (or ED). But is there another way to improve quality of care patient, cost-effectiveness, and patient satisfaction? What contribution can nurses give?
Definitely not, although I did a study on this some years ago in which I observed that by introducing see and treat for minor patients that the time to seeing the doctor was reduced by at least one hour for all patients including major patients. Of course the minors gained the most.
This had a huge impact on awaiting times and presumably total time in the department. We did not measure the latter because most of the factors influencing total time in the department were outside our control.
I would definitely recommend it based on my positive experience. I continue to use it
As you can see that see and treat lead to a considerable reduction in total time in the department and for several hours after it stopped, Even the stretcher patients saved quite q bit. Time to admission was outside our control. Hope this helps. In my opinion this initiative had an amazing effect on the time spent in the department. All patients, minor and stretcher benefitted, morale was very high and the waiting room was empty most of the time.
Hope you find these helpful. I did not do any statistics on these at the time
