A lot of people appear to think that one good reason for selecting open access journal publication is that it will be faster. In an era when all journals that count are published online, I can't see how or why that should be the case - certainly not for any journal that undertakes proper peer review. Is anyone aware of any evidence (current or not) that supports the assertion that open access publishing is faster?
Hello, To the best of my knowledge, open access journals are NOT faster.
If you want your paper to be published faster, you have to take the following actions:
(1) Do not submit to any of the (unlikely to accepted) Journals; submit to Journals that are >60% likely to accept your paper.
(2) Select Journals with the advantage of (online first, a head of print, or early view) option; this will make your paper appear online after acceptance without the need to wait being assigned to a printed issue.
(3) Some journals like those by SPRINGER give information in the home page about the average number of days till the first decision; and the average time from acceptance to appearing online.
- If you are considering open-access journals, it is important that you avoid predatory journals and predatory publishers (Available here on Beall's list: https://scholarlyoa.com/publishers/) they might provide faster publication but with no/weak peer-review and will not count in your academic profile.

Open access exists as journals and as e-print archives (repositories). Open access e-print archives are usually free of cost for both readers AND for authors. Some like Arxiv require registration and some like Arxiv and Vixra offer an efficient revision service.
Examples are: ArXiv, Vixra, HAL and PubMed Central
Open access journals are free of cost to readers, but they often request a publication fee from the authors. This publication fee can differ significantly. Often the service includes some kind of peer review and a citation service. These journals do not offer a revision service. A real flood of of such services have been offered in these last years. Only a part of these journals are reliable. A black list exists.
Be aware. No omniscient reviewer exist, thus peer review offers no guarantee for quality and peer review may block unjustified some unorthodox or controversial papers.
