Atoms in the sun core are very fast moving. I read, that for this reason the light produced as a by-product of hydrogen fusion cannot pass directly to the sun surface (which would be a matter of seconds), but takes a million years to reach the photosphere, from where it lasts another 8 minutes to reach the earth surface.
Yes indeed, it is scattered by the constituents of the sun and that means it takes millions of years to leave the Sun.
@ Gregory Camilli That is what is implicite in "scattering". If photons are scattered, the original photon is destroyed and a new one with the appropriate frequency, direction, etc. is created.
Yes it is true. They start as gamma ray photons in the core of the Sun and get absorbed and remitted million of times untill hey leave the solar surface as visable light.
