I'm checking the seismic capacity of a concrete frame structure by providing crossed braces with pinned release so for this purpose is it necessary to define the material properties and assign it to braces or does it just carry axial load so there is no need for defining and assigning the properties?

Of course you need their properties, unless you are doing a rigid diaphragm bracing, then no need, but if you were to do so, you would not be drawing any braces.
