Colleagues, I would like to hear your opinion: Is it possible to survive as an independent researcher in the humanities? How do you finance your research?
Hello: I agree with Larisa's explanations. I only would like to stress that "humanities" is an umbrella notion that recovers many different disciplines and specializations. And it depends in which one(s) you are working. For instance, there are many opportunities in commmunication, information and media sciences to valorize academic competencies and skills.
No idea if this helps at all but I work at the Wellcome Trust in London for Wellcome Collections as a 'Research Development Specialist'. My job primarily is to engage with early career researchers (7 years post PhD) to work with us on things such as placements, contributing to our research networks, even developing collaborative doctoral awards....
I'm also an academic scholar (previously worked at Uni of Warwick, Uni of Birmingham etc) so I know all too well how today's precarious contracts, among other things, can leave researchers isolated and struggling to connect, not to mention missing potential opportunities that could ironically help towards an academic post (that is if they want one of course).
Part of my job now is to reach out to said independent humanities researchers, with that description being as broad as possible, and yet....How on earth do I bloomin' find them???! Maybe my research skills aren't as high calibre as I thought, but my digging so far is spinning me round in circles! I think these issues are worse for indep. researchers from diverse backgrounds (I'm from a working class background so when not in post, figuring out how to connect and navigate opportunities baffled me). Such a crazy state of affairs when orgs such as the Wellcome genuinely want to engage....
