I mean if there can be a device which can learn the directions once and can memorize it. How useful it would be for the people working in remote areas, in jungles, in tunnels and for archaeologists. I saw the google compass app, paddle counter etc. Do you have any views regarding this area?
intelligent compass for Jungles and tunnels is quite possible but required handheld system to get communication from satellite. I used Handheld GPS used for normal terrain which gives direction and other information like Lat, Long etc.. But system need minimum signals from 8 satellite, sometime due to climate aspects it may fails.
For jungles system are available for military application.
there's a navigation device for jet fighters, which uses 3 laser gyroscopes and 3 quartz accelerometers, so it's doable. Another example is the system for automobile where the information is read from the CAN-bus (left/right wheel rotation speed). Do you want to make it or to buy it?
Smartphones have compass, 3D accelerometers, and gyroscopes. A plethora of apps (most are free) are available to record the data generated from moving the device. From this you can determine direction and distance covered. If you can add a pedometer and count steps as well.
