If we take a metal which is loaded elastically (near the yield point but still elastic) and heat it to a sufficient temperature, such that its yield strength drops, some of the elastic strain will be converted to plastic strain due to the new yield point being exceeded. If this is done for a short time such that subsequent recovery/recrystallization phenomenon are minimal, will overall dislocation density in the metal be increased?
