I would like to know if it is possible to enhance/foster critical thinking at low-intermediate French as a foreign language courses by using authentic materials?
Using original materials as teaching materials saves the teacher the time to prepare these materials and the effort to design them and think about their contexts, especially since what the teacher might try to prepare will not be of the same level or the same amount of realism.
Hi! For fostering critical thinking, I can see no argument for using other materials than authentic documents? Or do you mean that lack of language understanding in reading and discussing documents in French would make this difficult, so you would need to prepare materials in easier French?
Hi, I think it really depends on what do you mean by "authentic materials". And any material, if carefully designed, "critical thinking" opportunities can be embedded. But I do agree with Dr Anders Norberg, authentic documents would be best to be used since they mirror actual language use.
