I have done solid UV for my organic powdered samples and from there, I have got absorbance, transmittance & reflectance values. Is there any formula available to calculate the refractive index using these values?
It is easy if your sample doesn't absorb in any portion of the spectral region you used. Then, transmittance T is given by reflection losses at two faces of your sample: T=(1-R)/(1+R). R is the reflectance of one face of the sample given by the refractive index N as R=((N-1)/(N+1))^2.
If i did the algebra correctly the refractive index is then N=(1+(1-T^2)^0.5)/2.
If your sample absorbs, then it is more involved. Contact me at [email protected] if that is the case.
Thank you very much for all your valuable answers. I have to calculate the dielectric constant after calculating the refractive index for checking the non-linear optical application of my materials. Please help me in this regard.
