For testing influences such as humidity it's more relevant in my opinion, to have similar factors, than a natural enviroment,. But when it comes to mind, that "real life" circumstances that shall be simulated, also might depend on daytimes, variating temperatures might take effect as well.
What we are trying to do is balance easy of testing with realism. The ISTA and AOSA testing procedures are based on ideal conditions for the seeds and often conducted on paper or other artificial substrate with no microbial pressure. Some of the major seed labs in the US test tens of thousands of seed samples per year so the testing procedures cannot be overly complicated. We think that a suitable compromise would be to test seeds at a range of temperatures in soil instead of paper. Day length, humidity etc. may influence germination and seedling growth but controlling them adds undo complexity to testing procedures.

Maybe my question was formulated a bit bad. What I wanted to ask was, if the apparatus could be used to simulate a night fallof, though keeping up the relative temperature-scale which it should produce.
