Quadratic equations with complex root were considered unsolvable in secondary schools. this limitation is due to the lack of topic to address the idea of complex number in Nigerian secondary school Mathematics curriculum.
is it Okay to introduce the idea of the complex number so as to enable the student to solve a wide range of questions?
This question was raised by a student I coach when I told him that some quadratic equations do not have solutions in the realm of real numbers!
Dear professor,
The complex number phenomenon can be introduced depending on the capacity of the students and how much they internalized mathematics at this stage. I think some clever and enthusiastic students deserve to learn before their peers. Of course, we cannot disregard the situation of other students too. Absolutely, there must be a balance to be maintained between these levels.
Personalizing education for each individual is perhaps the best way. According to me, this makes a teacher a great person and a hero in the eyes of students.
