I am very familiar with R and I just know some basics of Python. It seems like R programming is more popular in Academia while Python is more popular in Industry. Currently, R is good enough to do my research work on data science. I am wondering if it is still beneficial to master Python at the same time. Could anyone who is proficient in both languages give me some advice, please? Thanks a lot!

The great difference between Python and R is that the first is a general purpose language and the second was specifically developed to statistical analysis (what do it a domain specific language).
Currently, both are largely used in data science, since Python has a wide (and incremental) set o libraries dedicated to statistics, data analysis and related subjects and R has it as its reason to exist.
If you want to perform statistical routines via scripts easily implementable to analyse data related to your research on academy, I recommend you to keep using R. But, if you want to expand your ideas, even inside the academy or out of it, projecting and developing new software based on analytical processes (or something like this), in this case, is better to use Python.

As a last option, you can use both together, through some specific libraries / packages that help marry the power of both languages.
