Open admission policies as employed in the U.S. tertiary institutions tend to first admit all eligible applicants. Eligible is generally documented with a secondary school diploma or General Education Development certificate. Post admission, the matriculates’ mathematics, reading and writing proficiencies are accessed for placement purposes. Those displaying the requisite tertiary level proficiencies are permitted to enroll in degree coursework. Matriculates failing to demonstrate the requisite proficiencies are generally required to enroll in remedial or developmental courses. Depending upon the depth of their deficiency, matriculates are required to enroll in one or more remedial course. The prescribed remedial sequence may take one term or up to two years to complete. Over 40% of remedial students drop out of their institution before completing the first year of enrollment.
