Many students prefer to have their written work graded without comments and corrections. Other students want to receive a grade and also comments and corrections.
What is, in your opinion, the better way to give feedback to students?
A grade can be a letter grade, A, B, C, D, E/F, or a percentage of 100%, or Pass/Fail, or other system of evaluation.
Corrections might involve factual errors, mathematical mistakes, or other objectively verifiable matter.
As we are ‘teachers’ and not just ‘monitors’ I believe it is important to provide some kind of comment, whether the student has turned in A-level work, or especially when they have miss the mark, particularly those students who have shown promise in the past. Throughout my own college education (I have 3 degrees and a doctorate-ABD) I always appreciated feedback from the instructor. If I turned in something that didn’t really meet the needs of the assignment, I benefited from comments describing what I didn’t get right, or how it needed to be corrected, and when I turned in A-level work, I benefited from the encouragement and approbation from people who were experts in their field. Sometimes, just a word or two, or even a well-chosen emoji, can have an immeasurable effect on a student’s future engagement. For me, their preference regarding my own grading policies is basically irrelevant.
You can be guided and referred to the assessment issued by specialists in a given field, but you should also read the article yourself and make an analysis yourself, think about yourself.
