Hi, I am writing my Master thesis and I wanted to insert one figure of a life cycle of a pathogen. Can I adopt one figure from a published source (research article or review) and slightly modify that figure if needed with proper citation like (This figure is adapted from (ABC et al., 2021).
I am sure that it is strictly forbidden in materials and methods and results sections but I heard from my colleagues and seniors that for literature review, we can modify and add those figures with proper citation. ? (It is not 100% same but at the same time it is not mine. I modified it slightly but I am citing)
Could you please give your valuable comments on this matter ?
If I personally send an email to that author and ask for a permission to use.
How can I mention in my thesis that I took permission from author to use that figure ???

As I know it is possible, for example, in my discipline ( fluid mechanics and hydraulics) many mechanisms about the vorex formation and development, local scouring, flow pattern, bed deformations and so on are presented using a basic shape/duagram from a scientist along with some chamges in those shapes/diagrams that are applied by the researcher.
