Management faculty use case studies in teaching. It is appreciated more and more. Faculty expect students to come prepared in class for discussion. Answers to the questions of cases may be different for different students, but MCQ answers are definite and will be same for all students. In my view there is a contradiction between teaching methodology and evaluation mechanism. I have experienced that would-be managers are not interested in mugging any subject. They are keen to understand. Again, I see a contradiction here. Looking for more insight on this issue from the fellow academics.
Good question Netra. However, I like to call your attention to the fact that each method of evaluation is suitable to assess different things. MCQ and TFQ are suitable as knowledge and retention of basics evaluation while case studies help in training students on critical thinking and conceptualization (reading between the lines of the facts). Both techniques are necessary form students' assessment in their learning outcomes.

Yes. Multiple choice questions can cover the full-range of mental (cognitive) abilities (Bloom, et al 1956): knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Therefore, these items can be used to assess learning at all the known levels in the cognitive domain. The difficulty is in writing the questions appropriately so the process verbs--words depicting the level of assessment--are germane to the level of teaching and learning that actually took place.
