Why in México don’t exist an institutional gate for construct a way were the anthropology of engagement build an epistemological bridge whit public policies… considering that in countries of south America like Ecuador, the paradigm of applied anthropology exist at private universities.
I think that Mexico live and bubble in traditional social anthropology because don’t exist a correct knowledge of this level of advance in general, but particularly the political class don’t have the interest about the sciences that super their vision and move the power directly at hands of civil sector.
Hello Gustavo- I agree with you that the political class in México does not have much knowledge/interest in the role of the social sciences in informing policy debates (I am a permanent resident of México living in Yucatán for 17 years). I do have colleagues who have done work for specific agencies, mainly in evaluation of projects- p. ej. full day primary school.
My own work is now focused on socio environmental conflict and employs participatory action research, in which the researcher (me) and the engaged community members work together to understand and seek solutions to pressing problems. I am not an anthropologist, but rather a "fellow traveller," with a doctorate in social policy. I have found that working at the local level and avoiding political alliances is the best use of my time, in terms of having an impact on the sustainable lives and livelihoods of communities with which I work.
