I have been studying magnetocaloric effects, but when it comes to giant magnetocaloric effect most authors start talking about metamagnetic and magnetostructural phase transitions as-well-as first-order magnetic transition as if they are different faces of the same coin. I know metamagnetism is more than giant magnetocaloric effect. Please can anyone recomment some topical article reviews or books that strictly discuss metamagnetism. I want to buy such books. Thank you.
One good book which takes this subject seriously is:

The trick that makes the magnetocaloric effect giant is the fact that contributions to the isothermal entropy change come not only from the spin degree of freedom but also from the lattice. Colleagues and I have shown how this works in a simple toy model.

Back to metamagnetism. The metamagnetic first order transition is typically accompanied by a structural transition. This structural transition can provide a large field-induced contribution to the isothermal entropy change which originates from the lattice.

Dear Kenneth: One important point is the statistical distribution of the thermal energy. It is possible to find this distribution without the Boltzmann hypothesis. This approach allows better calculation of the different measurement which are function of the thermal energy see “Perturbation and statistical distribution of the thermal energy” on my site. Thank you also for the explanation you have put forward, it is now making more sense to me. From your explanation, I can figure that the giant magnetocaloric effect is an after-effect of the structural or lattice entropy change of a metamagnetic material. I understand that I can increase or decrease the magnetocaloric effect of a metamagnet by playing with the lattice parameter, which will result in the increase or decrease in volume change associated with the material on the application of external megnetic field espcially near the Curie temperature of the material. I will now read more and try to understand more from the references you provided. Thank you so much.
