Electromagnetic braking system used a friction plate to stop or slow the motion. The field coil will produce lines of magnetic flux which will pull and hold the hub when voltage or current is applied thus slowing and finally stopping the vehicle motion. Is it differ from anti-lock braking system (ABS)? Does it perform better than drum brake and brake disc? Give your opinion on it.
Electromagnetic braking systems are employed where a large amount of torque has to be countered. the current braking system undergoes massive wear and tear if employed for large power demanding applications where the inertia of the rotating part will be huge. Electromagnetic braking are more efficient in such cases.
Also electromagnetic brakes requires less maintenance as it is frictionless, where as normal braking system needs constant lubrication.
Further the size of the braking system will also be less.
The most common application of electromagnetic braking is in electric locomotive.
Newer electric cars use a braking generator to recharge a battery. Secondary brakes apply friction when the generator is not enough.
