Many scholars wrote about BRI is impacting on the democracy. After this initiative democracies are facing several challenges. My question regarding this how Chinese project is impacting the democracy. Are these projects harmful democracy?
BRI was initiated by China which is under the control of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Even if CCP propagated BRI as an economic project, aimed at accelerating trade and the shared prosperity of humanity. But, for someone who has knowledge about China and a clear understanding of the communist regime that kind of propaganda is convincing. CCP is authoritarian and anti-democratic in nature. In China, there is no free private enterprise and nothing is considered solely related to economics or trade. BRI's primary goal is to serve the political and security interests of the CCP and trade and economics coming next. CCP is trying to expand its influence, export the authoritarian "China model", buy up alliances, and strengthen its position on the international stage...
There is a proverb that "actions say louder than words", look and observe what CCP is doing via BRI, rather than listening to vain propaganda.
My point is that China only focusses on economic interests. I am preparing a small piece of paper on CPEC: Curse or Blessing for Pakistani Democracy. I saw several papers and surveys where i found some little bit about impact of BRI on democracy.
Both economic and Political, including military interests remain perpetually critical in policies formulated by Advanced and/or Emerged Worlds. China holds stake in this classification.
Interesting paper [1] The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers in the Twenty-first Century: China's Rise and the Fate of America's Global Position , January 2016, International Security 40(3):7-53 "....Unlike past rising powers, China is at a much lower technological level than the leading state, and the gap separating Chinese and U.S. military capabilities is much larger than it was in the past. In addition, the very nature of power has changed: the greatly enhanced difficulty of converting economic capacity into military capacity makes the transition from a great power to a superpower much harder now than it was in the past. Still, China's rise is real and change is afoot".
