The views of Agronomists, soil scientists, geographers, soil and water conservation engineers, and the scientists/ teachers/ professors working on the management of natural resources are invited.
My take is the Gujarat Coast Alluvium has advantages and disadvantages.
For amelioration of saline sodic soils the good thing is this Narmada and Tapi are not sodic in of themselves.
They can be however alkaline which is not helpful could be low in organic matter.
To remediate a sodic soil calcium sulfate is used to increase Calcium and displace sodium and the use of organic matter such as well compost manures and the use of urea and sulfur might be recommended to give near neurtral or slightly acidic medium reaction.
Under the alkaline soil condition you need to be aware of micronutrient deficiency issues and the use of soil and plant tissue analyses are highly recommended.
Yes, I agreed with opinion of Dr. S K Singh that the basaltic alluvium of Narmada and Tapi are the natural ameliorant of saline sodic soils in Gujarat Coast. The water flows is the fresh rain water in these rivers that bring lot of calcium to replace sodium and other plant nutrients to support crops from Amarkantak in Narmada river alluvium. This water flowing from river also wash out the excessive salt enriched by capillary movements from ocean. But I am not aware about Tapi river system. My opinion is that both river do similar action on Gujrat coast soils. This natural action make the soils to sustain productive and agriculture as remunerative.
