Measuring university stduents' performance ought not be done by written exams only. Oral exams are more revealing. I suggest that you invite two persons, with practical working experiences in the world of finance, to test (together with you) the students (one by one) orally . When the student leaves, each of the 3 examiners writes a mark & then an average is calculated. This method has an added advantage since it prepares them for future interviews when they graduate & seek a career.

I have conducted a research on measuring academic service quality which basically measures the quality of teaching or instruction provided by professors or teachers. I used the SERVQUAL model as the foundation for my construct and questionnaire items. You can look up the SERVQUAL model in Researchgate or in google and you will be able to see how this model and its items look like. This model originally had 22 questions to measure customers's perceptions of service quality but could be modified to measure any type of service quality be it in the academia. This model has been widely used across different industries. Basically, the model views service quality to be made of the following five elements:

Tangibles: Physical facility, equipment and appearance of personnel

Reliability: Ability to perform the promised service dependably and accurately

Responsiveness: Willingness to help customers and provide prompt service

Assurance: Knowledge and courtesy of employees and their ability to inspire trust and confidence

Empathy: Caring, individualized attention the firm provides its customers.

When you search the 22 questions or items that make up these elements, you may find how interesting they could be when used to measure the quality of teaching. I think this model is very comprehensive and the author gives guidelines on how to modify the item in one article called "Improving Quality in America: Lessons Learned".

Experiments can be conducted by having a control group and a treatment group (both are subjected to different teaching pedagogy). Then administering a written examination to check their learning levels. 

This is a great idea and appreciate. I will combine your suggestion with others such as Neba & Nizar. I'm sure something good would surface.
