My dissertation was similar to a dual medium one, although it was all paper based. It was very innovative for my a subject area (mathematics) and it turned out to be almost impossible to find a suitable external examiner. The dual nature of my thesis also meant it was split subject (cognitive psychology), but my institution was not set up for split subject doctorates.
I was asked to do a major rewrite after my first viva but a friend advised me to leave it exactly as it was and write a second volume, which I did and achieved a doctorate quite easily in the end.
