There are different sources of rainfall data. You can rely on gauge stations which is not always publicaly available. If this the case, you will have to directly contact the aurthority in charge of collecting the data. Otherwise, this authority should have a website in which rainfall measurements can be downloaded.

As an alternative, you can study the literature and find papers that assessed the performance of available global datasets (such as ERA5, TRMM, CHIRPS, ...etc). Based on the performance of these products in the area of study you can justify you selection and download these freely available global datasets.

Thank you very much for your reply. I need ground-based rainfall data. I forgot to mention that in the question. I am trying to get rainfall data which having another researcher before contacting authorities.

You can download the data from the World Bank Group’s Climate Change Knowledge Portal by following these steps:

1. Log in to their website:

https://climateknowledgeportal.worldbank.org/download-data

2. Register (create your Login Account)

3. Click on "watershed"

4. Find Sri Lanka and locate the Kalu River watershed (note the number of the watershed)

5. Click on Time Series and use the number of the watershed to download the required rainfall data
