A controversial topic regarding its potential threat to humanity. Currently, AI can be very useful, contributing to improved efficiency and solving complex problems. However, if it is not developed and managed responsibly, it could pose a threat in the future, especially with the emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that can learn and make independent decisions. Therefore, the real threat depends on how we use AI, and how prepared we are to face the challenges associated with it.
The short answer to “Is AI an existential threat to humanity?” is no, it's not. In the relatively near future (a few decades) AI won't even be capable enough to be a threat. AI, as the field stands now, provides powerful and useful tools to do specific things.
However the long-sought goal of a “general AI” is not on the horizon. We simply do not know how to make a general adaptable intelligence, and it’s unclear how much more progress is needed to get to that point.
AI is not inherently a threat to humanity, but its risks depend on how we develop and manage it.... Currently, AI enhances many aspects of society, such as healthcare, automation, and data analysis. However, if left unchecked, future developments, particularly in autonomous weapons or unchecked surveillance systems, could pose significant threats. It’s not about "when" but "how" we guide AI's growth responsibly, with ethical frameworks and regulations.......
