I personally do not think these two approaches to qualitative research are compatible. Grounded Theory requires the continuing integration of data collection and data analysis, so that the interview content and coding both evolve together. In contrast, IPA relies on a small number of intensely personal interviews, which are collected separately, and then analyzed one-at-a-time.

IPA and grounded theory may not work together based on their different peculiarities unless the researcher is ready to do so much by integrating data collected to suit a new theory that will emerge from interpreting the responses of participants which is the main aim of grounded theory.

The strength of one approach is the weakness of the other, thus they are best viewed as complementary and employed in concert.
