Citations are collected automatically, not manually by the staff. When authors cite your publications, these citations will automatically be collected and added to your profile. This includes also citations from publications that are unrelated to your field. I am afraid their is no possibility to prevent this.

Your observation is caused by a relatively new phenomenon: some imposters here on RG create a pool of fake profiles with mainly (if not exclusively) AI generated ‘papers’ in order to artificially boost citations of the imposters. Back to your observation it is unfortunate that currently the RG database is polluted with AI generated stuff (created by fake profiles). My hypothesis is that (like the paper mill industry) currently a ‘company’ or person is running a “citation boosting factory” where you can buy citations to artificially boost your RG and (the most likely aim) your Google Scholar metrics. For this purpose, ‘they’ misuse the way too tolerant publishing policy of RG.

The good news is that these citations will never enter the metrics as calculated by Scopus and Clarivate. The only thing you can do is (like hopefully more RG members do) is reporting these fake profiles like this Warren Liang profile (for impersonation, uploading a paper that is not authored by this ‘imaginary’ person and a profile with hundreds (!) of papers all ‘published’ in a few months…, etc. etc.).
