Publons is a website and free service for academics to track, verify and showcase their peer review and editorial contributions for academic journals. It was launched in 2012 and by 2017 more than 200,000 researchers have joined the site, adding more than one million reviews across 25,000 journals
Publons is such a great initiative to encourage peer-review. This is a voluntary task that many researchers may skip, but Publons is a good way to give them adequate credit for their work. Here are some additional things or avantages they offer:
- If you are a junior researcher, you can join Publons Academy in which you can take a course in how to peer-review journal articles. They also ask you to review three papers of your choice with a mentor you choose.
- If you are interested in acting as a peer-reviewer, you can register with their partnering journals on their website and they will let these journals know that you are interested in reviewing for them.
- Your profile there (including your review and editorial experience" can be used to showcase your work in case you apply for any related research position.
