Unsure. In my view the tuition fees are a form of taxation - at least for the british citizens - that supports the higher education institutions. I am not in detail familiar with taxation in general in the UK and wether the increased "higher ed" fees will lead to a long term economic disadvantage for Britain. Of course it will also matter how the new revenues will be spent by the universities. Is the income from tuition really extra money for the universities or does it substitute cuts / declines in other income / revenues?
What I would watch is if the composition of the group of applicants changes. I doubt there will be many changes in the number of international applicants. But if and how the number of applicants from within the EU changes will be very interesting to see. If a significant number of school leavers from Britain chooses to avoid studying (in Britain) due to cost (or maybe other reasons) I would see reasons to really worry because in the end the size of the quota of academically trained plays a big role in a countries economic success.
Higher tuition (or having tuition at all) can help higher education by providing more revenue. There are of course major questions about how accessibility to higher education is affected especially for low income students. And thus the key question becomes the nature of the financial aid that is available to low income students in particular student loans and the nature of those loans. The US has been experimenting with income-contingent repayment plans but so far they're only a small part of the student loan system. I don't know what the student financial aid system in the UK is like; it may need substantial expansion if low-income students currently get little aid.
Hello Mr. Miller, Yes. I'm working financing higher education Turkey, in my opinion and shows to education literature, for example Canada experiment, there is negative corelation between tuition fee and entrance university. High tuition cause consequence less student in higher education. I think it shouldn't output of educaiton only economic growth, education in the same time human right. Whoever want to entrance to university, this condition make provide by goverment.
