Am working on Al composites and I want to do corrosion test on the samples, what should be the best medium to be used and the preferred concentration(s). I saw different solutions been used in the literature especially NaCl, NaOH, HCl and H2SO4 but most of them the concentration used was not mentioned.
Please help me with a clear explanation. Tq!
Aluminum is not resistant to corrosion in all of these solutions, even with minimal concentration (< 1%). The higher the concentration and temperature of the solution, the faster will corrode your composite.
In your place, I would have taken only a single test medium: 3.5% solution of NaCl. This is a standardized corrosion medium (seawater) and aluminum will corrode quite quickly in this medium. Results of salt spray tests with 3.5% NaCl-solution exist for virtually all materials and so you can compare your material well.

Concentrations of test solutions might depend on the scope of your work or the environmental condition of the medium at which the composite is to be used. However, 35g/L or 3.5%W/V NaOH is normally used since this is the conc of the salt in seawater. For acidic medium, 0.01 to 1M could be an ideal conc without inhibitor though I have seen up to 2M before now.
3.5 wt-% NaCl solution is commonly used for testing the corrosion of Aluminum composites. This composition approximately represents the sea water. HCL and H2SO4 will dissolve the entire aluminum composite quickly.
