We did a study investigating the effects of helical stirrups in beams and found out that beams with helical stirrups have low bending strength, high deflection and high bending modulus compare to other stirrups Geometry.
bending (or flexural ) strength of beams depends mainly on the depth and the amount of longitudinal reinforcement not on stirrups. hence , if you got low bending strength then you used shallow depth or low amount of longitudinal bars. those also are the cause of the large deformations.
The expected effect of the spiral stirrups is to increase the shear strength, and the ductility of over- reinforced beams
I can be more specified if you sent the beam dim. and reinforcement.
