The name "transistor" is said to be obtained from "transfer + resistor". It's a good start point to name it. Nevertheless, I wonder how researchers of today would prefer to name it when they consider the different functions and unlimited applications of it.

For sure, there are a many types of transistors (BJTs, various type of FETs, etc.), but please try to suggest a general name to fit alll.

I also wonder whether the transistor is called differently (and may be with different meaning) in other languages.
