I have a quantity of LiOH granules that has been triple bagged ( 2 layers of polyethylene and one of Mylar). I know when it was purchased, but not much else. Is there a a specification or general rule of thumb I can use to find how long the LiOH can sit on the shelf before the granules deteriorate? If so, where can I find the rate of deterioration? Since I do not know the manufacturer, i cannot ask them. THANKS!
Imre -- thank you for your response. So can it be said that LiOH is stable enough that, if isolated from humidity and CO2, it will not chemically degrade and, theoretically, it has indefinite life?
Yes. Even it gives some stable monohydrate LiOH*H2O (CAS 1310-66-3) in contact with moisture during long standing, that begins to lose crystallization water at 40°C and fully dehydrates at normal pressure at 108.9°C to give back the anhydrous LiOH. Contact with CO2 should be avoided, albeit the formation of Li2CO3 is not that fast in closed and full bottles, as the regenation of LiOH from the carbonate is somewhat more laborous.
