The question actually runs deeper than that. If you look at society today, a lot of money can be made through jobs that do not serve society as a whole. What value is added to the population at large by investment brokers who serve the already super rich? On the other side of the equation are social workers, all kinds of volunteers, parents who do their best to do a good job raising their kids, ... All of these people work for little or no money but their work has tremendous value for society. Have a look at David Graeber's book 'Bullshit jobs' for a more elaborate analysis of this. This pushes people with limited resources in shitty jobs for low wages, and, indeed, makes them subject to the whims of the ones that hold power over their jobs.
A guaranteed income for everyone would rectify this situation tremendously by giving everyone a financial safety net and thereby giving them better bargaining powers when searching for a job and it would be a boon for entrepreneurship on a small scale (not everyone wants to become the CEO of a multibillion dollar company).
