There is a client who has 4 CW pumps (~150kW each) in parallel and running on VFD drive Motor, and wants to add a pump with VFD drive motor as a spare.
Wanted to know if we have a existing DOL motor can the same motor be used as suitable for Variable speed drive, if yes then what changes does the motor need, maybe additional temp. protection or increase in size or heat load calc. for the motor windings for the given duty.

In general, a machine designed for DOL AC operation can be operated with a VFD. Actually the performance with a VFD is better than DOL or having star-delta starting mechanism as a good ratio is kept between Voltage / Frequency during startup. For a pump application, the load at zero speed is very low so there should be no problems.
However, when purchasing expensive equipment (since the machine is rated at 150 kW) it is always recommended to purchase from a reputable supplier. Such suppliers have application engineers who can guide you to a custom VFD solution.
