ECC can be used for key exchange to generate secure channels and ECDSA signing for authenticity (not confusion and not diffusion which are symmetric ciphers properties).  Elliptic Curve public key operations take less space and can be faster for the right choice of curves, and if your "thing" is small device, a an advantage.

In this respect, Bernstein's Curve 25519 is especially attractive (good performance to security tradeoff) http://cr.yp.to/ecdh.html
