Could you provide a literature reference for your current procedure? Are you trying to make an N-formyl or a C-formyl compound? If it is the first, your formylating reagent may have safety issues. Specifically, acetic formic mixed anhydride (CH3CO-O-CHO) can decompose rapidly, even violently under certain conditions, therefore it is usually prepared in the reaction medium and is not isolated. If you are using this reagent, I have significant experience with it and can provide you with additional information for safe preparation and handling.
