Pechini method is used for the synthesis of nanoestructures by using mild conditions and metal salts as starting materials. An organic acid, usually citric acid, chelates metal ions and the gel is formed by the addition of a crosslinker, as ethyleneglycol. I my case, I have used for the obtainment of spherical shape nanoparticles of different oxides at relative low temperatures.
Pechini method is an easy and simplest way to obtain a nano powder samples. This method is also called as sol-gel (wet chemical) method. In this method basically metal nitrates or metal salts are used a metal precursor and citric acid (tridentate ligand) tartaric acid (bidentate ligand) or EDTA will used as chelating agents. In order to obtain a thick viscous sol, will add ethylene glycol (Citric acid: ethylene glycol = 70: 30). In this content metal nitrates act as oxidant and organic complexing agent will act as reductant. The mole concentration of metal ions to chelating agent will plays an important role on the micro structure (phase purity, particle size) of the final product.
when we talk about applications in materials chemistry, we can synthesize various types of metal oxides, ceramic compounds and composites by using this method.
The advantages of the Pechini method lie in the steric entrapment of cations and the prevention of segregation. That is to say cation immobilisation. For this reason, the Pechini method is attractive for the synthesis of nanocrystalline oxides containing multiple cations sites, or single cation oxides where homogenous substitution or doping is desired.
By forming a polymer resin by esterification with EG, cations are homogeneously dispersed and segregation of multiple phases is inhibited.
By ordinary hydrolysis and condensation in typical sol-gel methods, the formation of multiple phases can often arise as the result of different hydrolysis and condensation kinetics for the different cation species. This is avoided in the pechini method by chelation (usually citric acid) and subsequent networking (polymerisation)
