I am writing a paper for which I need to drastically cut back the number of references. I'd like a quick way to determine which references I have cited most frequently, in my own paper. I use Refworks reference manager. I thought maybe there is a particular reference style that automatically includes this data, but I'm not sure. Thanks!
I use EndNotes and often face this issue but have found no solution (at least for the EndNotes). I get by by doing auto-find in MS Word (ctrl+F) for each of the reference number (as in my field we use AMA style which uses reference number in the running text).

Just search for the keyword and count. It's quick enough :)
If you have 90 citations, and authors that are repeated, it's actually quite time consuming. So far, i've found a few problems with the method suggested: 1. word does not search superscript numbers 2. if the numbers are not explicit eg. 5-8, so 6 and 7 are not explicit in the text, then ctrl f would not find them. Thus, a format using authors, rather than numbers, seems to be a more reliable way of using ctrl f, but it is time consuming, as I mentioned in the first point above, if you have several citation with the same first author. Seems to me that this is a simple algorithm that could be implemented in reference management software.
I suggest you consider a reference manager program, like EndNote. EndNote would handle this issue automatically and it is a program that is quite easy to learn. It also is a program that integrates with Microsoft Office/Word program.
Hi Kim - I do use a reference manager, as mentioned in my original post. Thanks for your response, though! I've used EndNote in the past and I currently use Refworks. I'm not aware that either program provides the tool that I am looking for - see my original post. It seems to me that it would be a great competitive feature for one of these software companies to add an algorithm that completes this task.
