You should find a better mentor to guide you (than random people on internet). Also dont let negativity get to you, its fairly common in academia. I don't fully agree with previous posters, since in my opinion begining PhD student certainly needs a little bit of hand holding. That means suggesting topics for research, and also literature for studying. If you have an inclination toward scientific programming I would recommend studying numerical methods related to your field of interest, but that just something I would do :) Good luck with your research!
