Hello

I have a rodent experiment with controls and treatment.

Two variables were measured: A and B.

After treatment, both A and B were DECREASED.

But, a strong NEGATIVE (or INVERSE) correlation was found between A and B (when A is high B is low).

Given that both A and B were decreased I would have expected the correlation to be positive (i.e. when A decreases so does B).

I'm not sure how to interpret the correlation in this case? Could it be that too are connected, but that other factors influencing variable A were at play? This is highly likely with biological systems. Also, the correlation doesn't state anything about the conditions under which the two would be correlated (i.e. in order to see the negative correlation they may need a certain environment / conditions )

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

Many thanks

Irina
