You can also obtain specimens for identification at local herbaria
It owuld be helpful if you could be more specific, "Forest inventory" - that could easily end up in a never ending story.... Are you interested in all plants? or only the trees and shrubs, i.e. the woody plants? if you are not having anyone else to support you then yes, collecting leafes/ fruit/ flowers of what you want to determine and comparing with local herbaria is a great idea - and still may need lot of time and some expertise.
