Our H2020 project focuses on marginalised rural areas? Within the team of 26 partner organizations we manage to agree on what marginalised areas are. However, validation from others working in the field would help. And is there a difference, in your opinion, between marginal & marginalised (these are not only, or rather not definitely, remote. Right?) Thanks.

The terms of your concern substantially differ from each other. Marginal means a kind of permanently unfavourable condition of the rural area in matter ,while marginalised addresses rural areas that once use to be better off but at present their status has decreased.of some reason(s)

The meaning of both marginal and marginalized should be explained by the individuals or groups who classified the given area as such. In most cases it is used in economic terms (f.ex. unfavorable conditions for investment etc.) but it could also relate to socio-cultural factors etc.

Better if we can agree on what marginalized areas are( good that you have done it). Meantime, marginalization is comparative subject as it depend on many variables such as the remoteness, access and mobility as well as type and nature of community/population ( they may have marginalized due to social and cultural reasons). However, marginal is completely a different subject..
Marginal or marginalized must be addressed in multiple methodological perspectives and multi-variable approaches. For example, for both, it would be relevant to take into consideration not only the objective approach as it can be defined by the researcher, but also the sujective approach leading to investigate on how the subjects feel themselves marginal or marginalized.
Concerning the variables, I would just insist on one aspect that could be neglected by many research projects: access to information and especially territoral information. This can deeply determine the scope of marginalization of rural population or ereas, as it would influence their integration in the national territory in various ways.
Marginalized rural area is used for those rural areas which are exhausted of the socio-economic and natural resources. For example, by the overuse of water, the quantity or quality of water has become unfit for use, employment is not available as possible employment opportunities have been exhausted, the farm size has dwindled and people are on the brink of poverty.
