I am ok with José, but I think also use the new technology as smart phone, but we should also work on the motivation and to explain the way to achieve the r objectives maybe also to explain more the importance of the hard skills
As a strength conditioning coach of 30 years, it has been my observation that the better we understand our students/employees and hold each to a continually escalating standard, that they will grow in their discipline/success and thus drive motivation.
With that said, I have had very well meaning and highly disciplined students loose motivation due to the individual ariving at their own conclusion that the effort is not worth their time/energy. As the old saying goes and holds true for today, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."
The use of games can help motivate students as this is supported by the quoted evidence below "Growing evidence indicates that games allow students to focus well enough to learn better. The Oct. 2010 issue of Training + Development magazine (American Society of Trainers and Developers) cites results of a University of Colorado study showing that using games to train adults in the workplace resulted in higher factual and skill-based knowledge levels and higher retention levels than programs that did not incorporate games". I also have an idea that the use of games will help students think faster and be better researchers.
Thanks Emily for your sharing. I agree that game can be the best tool to motivate students to learn but I think it is difficult to learn all kills using games, maybe for soft skills it is more easier.
Extrinsic motivators should be compatible with each student’s intrinsic motives. The final result (the outcome) of a course could be motivating as well as each of the meetings with a teacher/professor (the process of learning). The level of difficulty should be high enough to evoke interest and desire to overcome but not too difficult because excessive pressure may cause student’s withdrawal and apathy. The groups processes between students are also important to consider when designing interactive exercises.
A student will not become engaged and then motivated unless you find what their "hook" is. Once you find their "hook", then you have to start the laborous process of teaching discipline, and perseverance while they go thru struggle and defeat. The utopian view that has fed immediate gratification is actually working against students growing and turning into productive, critical thinking citizens that will make their sphere of influence a better and more enriched environment.
The talking heads that say, if you can't find a job, we will just pay you a living wage is a cancer to common sence , conomic independence and personal growth that comes with a true sense of accomplishment. and development of character.
We have to teach our children/students that nothing of worth is free and that good things lie on the road less traveled. Having worked for Santa Barbara Unified for almost 5 years I see how the system is emotionally teaching children what to think not how to think and process with rational thought.
I totally agree with you but the problem that we have as professor, less time to do that because there are courses, exams, ... few hours to do our job. At same time, many external factors like social networks and others educate our students and they decrease their critical thinking, they don't have time to think ... what is your opinion dear colleagues?
Nowadays, students look beyond the immediate future for a brighter encouragement. In most societies, the future looks bleak, and there seem to be no jobs out there, with almost zero opportunities for entrepreneurship. This, alone, is a discouraging factor for the student. So, I believe the encouragement should start from a rejig of the prospect for job opportunities in the system to motivate these students to work harder for the job ahead!
Thanks dear Edwin Chigozie Nwokorie. To give them assurance in future and job opportunities could motivate them. Even, I think they must be creative in the future because our society changes and jobs change also.
