If in a normal procedure, to determine the amount of carbon stock in a mangrove ecosystem, we measure parameters such as: soil, fallen wood, canopy density, DCH ... With the drone these parameters are not measured, can we? What tipes of drones you recommend to use?

By using drones, it will be possible to create very high resolution and at the same time highly accurate orthomosaics. With this we could generate individual tree crowns as well as the digital surface models created as one of the product of UAV image processing which gives us precise tree height. The other parameters as you mentioned such as DBH(Diameter at Breast Height) is possible only in the case if the forest area that you are flying is less dense. If it is dense forest, then we need to go for UAVs with LIDAR sensor on it. It depends on the type of research work you want to do, the objective of your research as well as the cost of the project. All I have to say is, it is possible.

Neida Melina Chow Well there are quite lot of UAVs available in the market. The choice of UAV and its sensor (camera) depends on various factors, one significant one being the budget you have for purchasing drones. In general UAVs with RGB camera like DJI Phantom series is a good investment to be made. LIDAR is a very expensive sensor system to have in drones. So, if the study area has sparse mangrove tree species, I will suggest you to use UAV to capture images (both in auto and manual mode taking sufficient number of pictures) and use it for your work. Just a suggestion, if the area is relatively smaller and you have very few species, then you can use normal digital cameras to take capture images of them from all sides with sufficient overlap. Process the images from UAV and digital cameras separately to derive point clouds. Then you can merge them to create orthomosaics, digital surface models, 3D models. Point clouds will help you measure different parameters associated with a mangrove tree.
