I'm working on a lithium-ion battery. i have prepared the coatings by tape casting. I saw several research papers where they take cross-sections of such coatings to see the binder has formed the network. if anyone can guide me as to how this can be done.
You can do this by FIB (focused ion beam) sectioning and observation of the interface at an angle, or you sacrifice one of the electrodes, cut it with something, or break, scratch, etc., and observe at an angle. If your procedure gives you repeatable results, sacrificing one of the electrodes should be a representative example for all other electrodes made the same way. If you are not interested in morphology, but only in the thickness of your coating, then you can use ellipsometry or X-ray coherence Tomography XCT for non-destructive measurements. Of course, FIB is the best technique for this task if you have it. If not and if your electrode is not too hard you can try as an alternative other typical technique based on fixing the material (we did this for composite films) in the epoxy resin followed by slicing into ultrathin cross-sections with help of the ultramicrotome using freshly made glass knives. These slices were gently placed on the microscope meshes.
