the researchers are using different filler materials to know the effect of filler material in polymer composites. so which is best way to select the filler material
There are many ways you can skin this cat, I can sum up few
Property enhancement - most common approach, where you can bring in a filler system, which complements your polymer properties (such as mechanical (anisotropic fillers, isotropic fillers, etc.), electrical, thermal, rheological, etc.
Cost - Some filler are used to complement cost based dynamics for polymers (calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, etc.)
Alloying - Sometimes different polymer groups are added into a polymer as a filler for alloying purpose (again this is a subgroup of property enhancement)
Reactive fillers - Some fillers are incorporated to react with host polymer system to change its chemical nature upon activation (foaming agent, crosslinking agent, etc.)
Tracer fillers - these type of fillers are mainly used in a commercial environment, where you can incorporate them into your polymer system just for product traceability
Again, I can go on and on, but this is very case specific. The bottom line is, you should have a definitive target requirement, which can not be achieved by a single polymer system and hence you need some sort of filler system to complement your polymer system.
